short film – 15′ – 2023

In the sea, a man swims. As he swims, memories come to the surface. From his early childhood to his life as a man, all his memories are linked to water. Some are happy, others glorious, others traumatic. This story will be his last swim. It will take us from the source to the river – from the waters of childhood pools to those of swimming pools – from a North African country to the shores of the Mediterranean – from Olympic stadiums to water retention basins – from concentration camps to the dreamy beaches of Reunion Island. Man will finder in the blue infini of the sea.

Born in 1956, Florence graduated from the Ecole Na- tionale des Arts Décoratifs with a specialization in engraving. She began her professional career as a layout artist for the press, exhibiting drawings and engravings. In 1991, she directed her first short film Hammam. Since then, she has imposed a very personal style on animation cinema. She makes her films with paint, pastel or sand, directly under the camera by overlapping. Her work has been noticed in various festivals in France and abroad. She received the César for the best short film in 2002 for Au premier dimanche d’août, a special mention at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006 for Conte de Quartier and in 2015 received a Cristal d’honneur at the 39th Annecy International Animation Film Festival for her work. She has worked as a teacher in various animation schools: Gobelins, ENSAD, La Poudrière… and continues in parallel to the realization her work as a visual artist. Most of her films were written in collaboration with the writer Marie Desplechin. Their feature film The Crossing released in 2021 received many awards all round the world.
